A

number of celebrities-turned-politicians are trying their luck in politics by running as candidates for the Jakarta Legislative Council in the 2019 legislative elections.

At least four celebrities have passed the requirements set by the Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) on Sept 20. They are former child singer Tina Toon who will run as a councilor for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). She is registered in the DKI Jakarta 2 electoral district representing Thousand Islands, Koja, Cilincing and Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta.

If she wins a seat, Tina said she would focus on improving education in Jakarta.

“I will actually [focus on] the educational aspect. I want to make sure the system runs smoothly and adequately,” Tina said as quoted by kompas.com when she registered at the KPU Jakarta on July 17.

Nuraina, the vocalist of Shaden the one-hit-wonder band that was famous in the 1990s, is also seeking re-election as a councilor for the Gerindra Party. She is registered in electoral district 7, which comprises Setiabudi, Kebayoran Lama, Cilandak, Kebayoran Baru and Pesanggrahan in South Jakarta.

Nuraina was elected as a council member in the 2014 legislative election.

Nuraina’s husband, actor Hikmal Abrar Nasution, is also running for a council seat for Gerindra.

Seasoned actor Ayu Azhari is campaigning for a seat for the National Mandate Party (PAN). Ayu said she would focus on education, health, children and women issues. (gis)
