Indonesia's men’s para swimming team was unable to race in the 4x100m relay at the 2018 Asian Para Games after the team manager forgot to register the team.
ndonesia's men’s para swimming team, which was set to compete in the 4x100m relay at the 2018 Asian Para Games, failed to compete at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Aquatic Stadium on Monday after the team manager forgot to register the team before the competition began.
The act of negligence was admitted to by coach Handoko Purnomo, who said the Indonesia Asian Para Games Organizing Committee (INAPGOC) had set strict rules about the registration process.
The oversight occurred because the team was focused on registering two other swimmers who had yet to be listed to compete that day.
“We faced problems registering those two swimmers so were late registering the relay team […] We forgot to register them as we were occupied with the problem,” Handoko said on Monday.
He said INAPGOC did not tolerate any team that was late registering, even if it was only five minutes. Besides Indonesia, Cambodia's swimming team was also late to register, he added.
Handoko said he had apologized to his team for the negligence.
“As coach, I apologize,” he said. (yan)
