intaro subdistrict head Dimas Prayudi has asked residents of neighborhood unit (RT) 10, community unit (RW) 02 in Bintaro, Pesanggarahan, South Jakarta, to wear face masks to protect them from odorous white smoke coming out of a nearby mound.
“Since yesterday, I’ve asked the RT head [to tell residents] to wear facemasks. [The smoke] can cause acute respiratory infections [ISPA],” Dimas said on Wednesday as reported by kompas.com.
He added that his office had requested help from the Fire and Rescue Agency, Water Resources Agency and Environment Agency.
“The [South Jakarta] Environment Agency has also told residents to be more careful [of the smoke],” Dimas said.
Firefighters were dispatched on Wednesday to douse the smoke, but it continued even after firemen poured water on the mound.
Dimas said he planned to ask the Jakarta Water Resources Agency to drudge the mound, adding that the smoke might have originated from trash burned by residents months ago. The site had been covered with dirt but still produced smoke, he added.
A resident named Tomi said he lived around 100 meters from the site, which had been emanating smoke for some time.
“It has been this way for a long time, I think about five months,” Tomi said. (ami)
