ater cannons welcomed the maiden flight of Singapore Airlines to Canberra, the capital of Australia, on Wednesday. The aircraft touched down at around 8:15 a.m and was showered with two water cannons for the welcoming ceremony.

The flight then continued to Wellington, New Zealand, making the airline the first in the world to connect two capitals.

The airline will fly the route four times a week using a Boeing 777. The plane can accommodate 266 passengers, including 38 business-class seats.

“This new service linking Singapore, Canberra and Wellington reflects the close ties between the three countries,” said Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong.

Passengers were welcomed with a small ceremony at the airport in Canberra.

The Singapore-Canberra-Wellington route is the first direct flight into the Australian capital since Air Pacific’s short-lived service to Fiji. (dan)
