thlete Felda Evira Santoso contributed on Monday the first gold medal to Indonesia’s wushu team in the 2017 SEA Games, after winning the women’s daoshu (broadsword) by scoring 9.67.

Felda upstaged teammate Monica Pansisca Sugianto, who secured a slightly lower score of 9.66 to earn her a silver.

Both Indonesians edged Singapore’s We Ting Long, who finished third with a score of 9.63.

“I am very happy. My mother is much happier with my gold medal,” said the 24-year-old Felda, who hails from Surabaya.

The victory brought joy and enthusiasm to the faces of dozens of Indonesian supporters watching the competition at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KCC).

“Red and white!” shouted one supporter, referring to the Indonesian flag.

“We are on a positive track to reach our target of winning three gold medals in wushu,” said Erwin Wijaya, the Indonesian wushu team’s leader.

In the men’s category, Achmad Hulaefi took home a silver medal in daoshu gonshu, following Singaporean Si Woe Jowen Lim, who won the gold.

Fellow Indonesian Muhammad Daffa pocketed a bronze in the men’s qianshu.

“We are optimistic that we will reach our target. Felda will still compete [in another category],” Erwin said.

So far, Indonesia has clinched four gold medals, putting the country in fifth position in the sporting event’s medals tally.
