Lion Air's full service arm Batik Air has revealed plans to open a new domestic route from Pekanbaru to Bandung on Friday.

Set to be available once per day, the upcoming flight route will use the Airbus A320 aircraft that can accommodate 144 economy and 12 business-class passengers.

"We have plans to open new routes as we are expanding our fleet, one of them is Pekanbaru-Bandung," said Lion Air Group Batam public relations head Novianti Masriani Harahap to Antara news agency on Friday, adding that it aimed to cater to the increased number of businesspeople and tourists traveling to Bandung.

Currently only budget carrier Citilink flies the route after Indonesia AirAsia shut down its daily Pekanbaru-Bandung service on Aug. 1.

Previously, Batik Air president director Achmad Luthfi said the company would open new routes in 10 cities in this year's second semester after it received 14 new Airbus aircraft. The airline currently has 33 aircraft comprising 14 Boeing 737-800ER, six Boeing 737-900ER and 13 Airbus A320CEO. (kes)
