ational flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has begun flight operations with four new ATR 72-600 aircraft to increase connections in various regions of Indonesia, namely in Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Maluku and Papua.
"The ATR aircraft, which can accommodate 70 passengers, will cater to air transportation needs in the eastern part of the country," said PT Garuda Indonesia region IV vice president Dian Ediono on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
He added that the new routes, including Biak-Nabire-Timika and Biak-Nabire-Jayapura, aimed to open access to Papua in a bid to boost the local economy and accelerate the region's development and tourism.
The maiden flight for one of the new routes on Monday carried several Garuda Indonesia representatives and Biak Numfor Regent Thomas Ondy. (kes)
