reviously uninhabited, Bawah Island in Anambas Islands regency, Riau Islands province is set to open an eco-friendly resort in mid-2017.
As a conservation project, Bawah Private Island Resort aims to provide holistic environmental protection. Its sales and marketing communication director Bala Navaratnam told The Jakarta Post that the property applied a zero-waste concept.
“The waste, be it solid waste, blackwater or sink waste, will be recycled. The solid waste will be moved by boat to be recycled on another island, while sink waste will be used to water the plants,” said Navaratnam during a recent press trip to the island, adding that other waste would be recycled using a renewable energy system.

The resort will also reportedly hire a farming specialist to find suitable plants to grow. Meanwhile, to protect the marine life, fishing around the island is prohibited.
“Our main goal is [to educate guests about] how to live with other people in nature,” said Navaratnam, “We don’t want people to leave the island with only a suntan. We want guests to experience nature and rediscover their true selves.”
As for facilities, the place will be equipped with 35 private villas, a library, a restaurant, two bars, an infinity swimming pool, spa and health center and a watersport center. Outdoor enthusiasts can also enjoy jungle trekking while staying there. (kes)
