irlines have often been criticized for their cramped seating, with not much room to get comfortable and relax. But that may change in a few years, thanks to new modular passenger-carrying planes, aimed at customizing the in-flight experience.
Aerospace company Airbus has taken its plans for electric, modular vehicles and extended them to planes, with an entirely modular passenger aircraft cabin now in the works, according to AFP.
The project director behind “Transpose”, Jason Chua, is looking to totally reinvent air travel with the use of modules. The idea is to reorganize cabins based on the needs of the current passengers or route being flown, something that presently cannot be done due to extensive regulatory procedures.

The current plan is to utilize the basic framework of cargo planes, as they are much more open than commuter aircraft. From there, removable modules can be attached to the structure of the plane as required. For example, rows of seats can turn into beds, or a gym or kid’s play area can be attached.
Those with ideas for the project are invited to share them with Airbus on Twitter, via @flytranspose. (sul/kes)
