P

lans to upgrade tourism facilities at popular site Ijen crater, complete with a cable car across the area, are currently being discussed at the Tourism Ministry, as the popular destination in Bondowoso, East Java has been included in the national strategic tourism plan.

Adi Sunaryadi, head of Bondowoso Tourism, Youth and Sports Agency, says the development would include other related parties, including the Environment and Forestry Ministry and private investors.

"So the Ijen crater tourist site is set to be an international destination that would be equipped with a cable car from Paluding to the crater. Visitors would also be able to enjoy the crater and the surrounding natural tourist area from above in the cable car," Adi said on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Although located between Bondowoso and Banyuwangi, the Ijen crater was managed by the Jember Natural Resource Conservation Agency (BKSDA) before the central government listed the site in its national plan.

"From the meeting results at the Tourism Ministry in Jakarta recently, much of the access to the cable car would be built from Bondowoso. For that reason, we continue to actively participate in the ministerial meetings," Adi said.

While the crater area has been turned into a natural tourist park, Adi reassured that its function as a nature reserve would be maintained. (liz/kes)
