'Mudik' Tourism: Nine destinations to visit in Tegal

Tegal has several tourist attractions that are worth visiting. Listed below are the top nine places to go if you happen to be in the city.

ost people tend to associate Tegal with warung (food stalls), salted duck eggs and sate kambing (grilled skewered lamb). The city of Tegal, however, has a lot more to offer than just its mouthwatering dishes.

Located on the north coast of Central Java, Tegal also has several tourist attractions that are worth visiting. Listed below are the top nine places to go if you happen to be in the city.

Guci Hot Spring

The most famous tourist attraction in Tegal, the Guci hotsprings are located at the foot of Mount Slamet and provides natural hot water from beneath the surface of the Earth. The water here is believed to contain a lot of health benefits for the body, which is why this place is always full of visitors.

Rita Park

A rising tourist attraction for families, Rita Park is said to be the biggest amusement park in Central Java and offers a lot of rides, such as Cinema 5D, bumper cars, Circus Travel, Flying Tiger, Frog Jump and Kiddie Ride.

Curug Luhur

Unlike other waterfalls that mostly end in deep pools, the one in Curug Luhur has a shallow pool beneath a 25-meter waterfall where people can enjoy playing in the water surrounded by rock cliffs and trees.

Alam Indah Beach

Alam Indah Beach is strategically located near the center of Tegal city and not far from the northern coastal (Pantura) route. People come to this beach to take in the scenic view of the beach at sunset.

Gerbang Mas Bahari Waterpark

Gerbang Mas Bahari Waterpark is located in Tegal and is the perfect place to go with the family during the holiday season. There are plenty of swimming pools that you can dip your toes into, such a children’s pool and a wave pool.

Lawet Cave

Make a stop at Lawet Cave to see a 100-year-old cave that is believed to have been visited by a number of rulers and kings from the historic Mataram Kingdom.

Semedo Archaeological Site

Located in Semedo village, Kedung Banteng district, about 24 kilometers from Slawi city, the Semedo archaeological site features the fossils of several ancient animals, such as elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotami, deer, pigs, cattle and buffalo. The place also has the skull of a Homo erectus individual and relics such as chopping tools and shale rocks.

Curug Putri

The water of the Curug Putri waterfall comes from the Kalipedes River that springs from Mount Slamet. The waterfall itself is about 25 meters high and separates Dukuhbenda village from Padanama village.

Curug Penganten

Not far from Curug Luhur are other waterfalls called Curug Penganten. The height of the waterfalls in Curug Penganten are only 14 meters, shorter than the one at Curug Luhur. This place has two side-by-side waterfalls that will remind you of a couple, hence the name Curug Penganten (the bride-groom waterfall). (asw)
