tarting from August until the end of this year, there will be a plethora of music events in Jakarta featuring both international and local artists, including Liam Gallagher, Ed Sheeran, Charli XCX, All Time Low, iKon and Raisa.

If you rarely attend such events in the capital, below are some suggestions to consider in order to get the best experience:

Ticket prices are equal to the experience

Sometimes you really do get what you pay for. Some music events provide different types of tickets for their audiences that will determine their experience throughout the event, such as the entrance time, backstage access and view of the stage. Some also provide special packages that include two different events, and travel packages that include a ticket for the event and hotel vouchers.

Japanese pop culture event C3 AFA (Anime Festival Asia), for example, has different options for attendees. The VIP Package holder will have access to the event’s exhibition, stage and concert areas, as well as receive one autograph from an artist performing in the I Love Anisong concert session and one light stick. Meanwhile, there are also tickets for those who want to explore only the exhibition or gain access to all areas without additional privileges.

What to do before the event starts

There are many activities that you can do while waiting for the event to start, such as go to the toilet or purchase official merchandise. Some K-pop (Korean Pop) and J-rock (Japanese Rock music) concerts also provide special booths for fans who want to give special gifts to their favorite artists. Therefore, you will not get distracted once the event begins.

Pay attention to the schedule

Music festivals are usually held for more than one day, so it is best to check the event’s rundown to decide on which performers you want to see. It is advised to purchase a pass for two or three days of the festival.

Music, arts, fashion and food festival We The Fest (WTF) 2017, for instance, announces long ahead of time the musicians it will feature in the three-day event and also the date on which they will go on stage. If you want to exit the venue, make sure you will be allowed to re-enter. At the WTF 2017, each ticket holder will receive a wristband that can be used if you want to return to the festival.

Don’t bring prohibited items

Different music events will set different rules in terms of banned items. In some cases, audiences are not allowed to bring water bottles, sharp objects, cameras and perfume bottles into the venue.

Beware of pickpockets

It does not matter whether the concert is held indoor or outdoor, because pickpockets can be found everywhere. Bring only necessary items, such as your concert ticket, wallet, identity card and smartphone in a small bag, so you would still be able to keep an eye on it when you are having fun throughout the event. Furthermore, if your concert venue is in an open area, it is also best to bring a raincoat and a hat.

Keep your attention on the concert

Sometimes it is tempting to record your favorite musician’s performance because then you can share it on social media or YouTube as “fancam.” However, it is advised to keep your phone in your bag and keep your attention on the stage instead of watching the show through your smartphone or iPad screen; be mindful of other audiences who also want to enjoy the concert. Some promoters also let their own staff wander around the venue to warn audience members who keep recording the performance even though they had been told not to. (kes)
