The 3rd Sawahlunto International Songket Carnival 2017 is set to be held from Aug. 25 to 27 in Sawahlunto, West Sumatra.
“Hopefully this event will fire up the spirit of weavers to keep on creating new things using the long-held tradition of Silungkang,” said Sawahlunto Mayor Ali Yusuf.
Back in 2015, the carnival broke the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) for the largest number of participant in a songket event.

Themed "Heritage for Sustainability", the event will feature Songket International Exhibition on Aug. 25-27, Cilik Fashion Show on Aug. 25, SISCA Night on Aug. 26, Archipelago Songket Conference on Aug. 26 and Songket Silungkang Carnival on Aug. 27.
Songket Silungkang is mostly made by hand, which gives the weavers the freedom to create plenty of motifs and colors that fit the market. The most dominant colors are red and black but the modern ones offer plenty of other colors, such as green and blue.
Songket is considered as a heritage value, not only due to its golden thread but also its function as an accessory for traditional costume. (kes)
