Indonesia has been named the "Best Destination of the Year" at the 28th Annual TTG Travel Awards 2017.

“If we can dream it, we can achieve it and this is the proof. I’m a believer that [our] tourism can compete with other countries and we’ve proved it today by winning [this award] over Thailand, last year’s winner,” said Tourism Minister Arief Yahya.

Thailand is currently the archipelago's strongest competitor in Asia. In 2016, it welcomed 36 million foreign tourists whilst Indonesia only recorded 12 million.

The award will be given officially at the Gala Dinner TTG Travel Awards slated on Sept. 28 at World Ballroom, Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre.

“Wonderful Indonesia will take home the 24K gold-coated Hermes trophy,” said Arief.

First held in 1989, TTG Travel Awards is an annual event that celebrates tour and tourism industry in the Asia Pacific. It gives awards to company, organization or government that are considered to be the best in the travel industry. The award categories are classified into travel agent, hotel and resort, airlines, MICE and tourism practitioners. (kes)
