Do we really have the choice to have tasty airplane food?
s if ordering food in a restaurant isn’t hard enough already, modern humans are faced with the prospects of pre-ordering food to consume in an airplane on long-haul flights. But do we really have the choice of ordering tasty airplane food?
Yes, we do! According to experts, we can also minimize the unhealthy factors of each meal we order. Travel experts share several tips on what meals to order and what to eat on a plane so your flight is more bearable.
Opt for stew or fried rice
Fritz Gross, director of culinary excellence at LSG Sky Chefs Asia Pacific, told CNN that his main priority in serving airplane food was not taste, but safety. Serving an average of 30,000 meals for multiple airlines on a daily basis, LSG Sky Chefs Hong Kong is known for preparing large volumes of food, hence consistency must be maintained. The heating and re-heating of airplane food can strip a meal of its flavors, but stew has been proven to maintain them.
“We can simmer it and reheat it over and over and it will still be a stew,” Gross said.
Fried rice is also proven to retain its moisture and still taste delicious when reheated. Pasta is a bad choice as it is best consumed al-dente.
Only eat seafood in first class
InFlightFeed creator, Nikos Loukas, told Insider that overcooked seafood cannot be saved. Bear in mind that preparing airplane food is a massive operation, so overcooking is a risk.
“Most seafood I’ve come across has been generally quite good, but I’ve been lucky to be in premium cabins,” Loukas said.

Ice cream: Delicious and safe
Loukas also highlights the simplest meal option: ice cream. With a variety of toppings and flavors, ice cream is a delicious and safe alternative to the usually bland airplane meal.
“Ice cream is really good. It tastes the same in the air as it does on the ground,” Loukas said.
Don’t hesitate to order a special meal
It is okay to order special meals on international flights, even if you don’t have any strict health or religious dietary restrictions. Steve Meacham of Traveller.com.au said ordering a special meal will give you a feeling that you are in control, and they usually taste better than the regular meals served. (asw)
