P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo recently attended a limited cabinet meeting that talked about the development of 10 New Balis on Nov. 16.

“There’s a huge opportunity to develop our tourism if we have plenty of new tourist destinations,” said Jokowi at the meeting.

He explained that tourism is currently growing in the global scene, such as China that sends out 125 million tourists in a year. In five years, the number is expected to reach 180 million.

Additionally, out of the 125 million Chinese tourists, 62 million traveled to Asian countries.

Jokowi asked for the 10 New Balis to be developed quickly and for each destination to be different from others.

“I feel like we need to have that distinction. We hope that from the 62 million [Chinese] tourists, half or third of them can come to Indonesia and that’s already 20 million people from one country,” he told.

Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said that it takes a village to develop the tourism industry; he himself implements the ABCGM (Academician, Business Community Government and Media) Pentahelix concept where he partners with other ministries and departments to boost tourism development.

Infrastructure needs the help of Public Works and Housing Ministry, accessibility is with Transportation Ministry, nature is with Environment and Forestry Ministry, culture is with Education and Culture Ministry, corporation is with State-owned Enterprises Ministry, ICT is with Communication and Information Technology Ministry, immigration and customs are with Law and Human Rights Ministry, promotional budget is with Finance Ministry, overseas promotion is with Foreign Affairs Ministry, homestay and tourist village are with Rural Development and Transmigration Ministry, safety and security are with the National Police and destination development is with regional administrations.
