The ancient Chinese festival returns this summer under the modern skyline of Victoria Harbor.
The ninth annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival has pulled into port at Hong Kong’s Central Harborfront and Victoria Harbor.
According to a statement released by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, 160 teams from around the world will be there to compete in 27 championships, bringing over 4,500 athletes with them. Countries in attendance include Australia, France, the United States, Japan, Korea, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Mainland China.
The paddlers will compete in the Ultimate Dragon Boat Showdown at Victoria Harbor, followed by a fancy dress competition where paddlers with the most creative costumes will be given an award.
Organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, in cooperation with the Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association (HKCDBA), the carnival will transform into a party at the Central Harborfront, featuring entertainment, games and food truck delicacies on the grounds designed to look like a beach.

Prior to the carnival, several boat races took place in Stanley, Tai Po, Sha Tin, Tuen Mun, Sai Kung and Aberdeen, all in Hong Kong. A traditional Hong Kong delicacy, zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings), commonly eaten during dragon-boat festivals, was highlighted at the events.
The three-day long carnival runs from June 22 to 24. (sul/mut)
