A

s Indonesian schools are moving to reopen their doors in July, Education, Culture, Research and Technology Minister Nadiem Makarim has reiterated that the limited face-to-face learning (PTM) that will be implemented is not the same as the regular PTM prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier on Monday, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo provided an example of limited face-to-face learning, with classes only filled up to 25 percent capacity and only two days of learning per week at two hours each.

“The President has provided an excellent example. Schools implementing or in the process of implementing limited PTM in terms of learning duration and number of students allowed, provided they follow health protocols and stay under the limit outlined in the joint ministerial decree [SKB] on learning guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Nadiem explained, adding that there were no changes to the SKB.

To date, approximately 30 percent of Indonesian schools have implemented limited PTM according to their respective situations and conditions, with some having started last year.

“As I have heard directly the concerns of teachers, parents and students on distance learning, the President also expressed his own. He said that distance learning is in reality very hard on everyone involved, and that we should have the courage to encourage limited PTM that is of course accompanied by strict health protocols,” he said.

Previously, the Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry and the Religious Affairs Ministry published a guide on early childhood, primary, and secondary learning during the COVID-19 pandemic that can assist in the implementation of limited PTM. The guide can be downloaded at bersamahadapikorona.kemdikbud.go.id or spab.kemdikbud.go.id.
