joint team formed by the North Sumatra Customs and Excise Office and the North Sumatra Narcotics Agency (BNNP) successfully foiled an attempt to traffic 35,000 grams of crystal methamphetamine last month.
Parjiya, the head of the North Sumatra Customs and Excise Office, revealed on Tuesday that the crackdown on the attempted trafficking was conducted in two separate operations: one on May 20 at Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, and the second on May 31, 2022 in Medan Johor subdistrict in the provincial capital.
Parjiya explained that the crackdown began when the North Sumatra BNNP received a tip that sabu-sabu, the street name for crystal meth, would be transported from Deli Serdang and Medan Johor to another province using a delivery service.
“Following up on the information, the North Sumatra interdiction team conducted an intensive investigation and found out that two packages had reached PT Apollo Kualanamu’s regulated agent at the Cargo Warehouse, Lini 2 No. A5-A8, at Kualanamu airport,” said Parjiya.
“The interdiction team, comprising [personnel from] the North Sumatra Customs and Excise Office, the Kualanamu Customs and Excise Office, the North Sumatra BNNP and PT Apollo Kualanamu’s regulated agent, then traced or conducted controlled delivery of the two packages,” he added.
On May 20, members of the interdiction team arrested the suspected recipient of the packages, identified as B. The two packages contained 1,000 grams of crystal meth concealed in ground coffee.
The packages were then allowed to continue on the scheduled shipment to Mataram, the provincial capital of West Nusa Tenggara, to another suspect identified as E. Local authorities, working in conjunction with the joint team, apprehended E as well as four other suspects of the attempted drug trafficking.
The four Indonesian citizens, identified as M (43), RJ (40), APN (46) and DPY (39), were all detained on suspicion of being involved in drug transportation.
A little over a week later on May 31, the officers traced two other packages to their departure shipping point in Medan Johor. The packages, which contained 3,000 grams of sabu-sabu, were wrapped in a bedcover for transporting using a shipping service in Pangkalan Mansyur, Medan Johor.
“Based on the available information, it was learned that the sender has shipped three other packages containing 7,000 grams of sabu-sabu to different destinations.
“We have also arrested two suspects identified as M and RI who have confessed to being tasked with sending the packages. We then searched a rented room where the suspect was staying and found 24 rolls of sabu-sabu weighing 24,000 grams,” Parjiya said.
The suspects and all evidence gathered during the investigation are now in the custody of the North Sumatra BNNP for processing.
“We hope that the good synergy and collaboration between the Customs and Excise Office and BNNP will continue, such as when the North Sumatra interdiction team collaborated on tracing or conducting controlled delivery. Hopefully, the synergy will be developed further to safeguard Indonesian citizens from the threat of narcotics,” he said.
