T Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. or BNI commits to becoming an agent of transformation by applying environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. Accordingly, BNI (stock code: BBNI) actively continues to add portfolios in the green financing and green activity category. Most recently, with the support of the state-owned electricity company , PLN, BNI emerged as a pioneer in the banking industry as a financial institution that operates two Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU).

This step is a follow-up to the signing of the cooperation agreement between BNI and PLN on April 26, 2022, related to the Provision of SPKLU Infrastructure in the BNI Area.

The BNI Head Office, on Sudirman street, Jakarta, hosted the inauguration of the construction of the two SPKLUs on Tuesday (July 19, 2022). BNI built two SPKLUs simultaneously around its office, with the other occupying the BNI Pejompongan Tower in Jakarta.

Present at the SPKLU inauguration ceremony were BNI president director Royke Tumilaar, PLN president director Darmawan Prasodjo, and BNI deputy president pirector Adi Sulistyowati. BNI corporate banking director Silvano Rumantir, BNI service and network director Ronny Venir, PLN Director of Commerce and Customer Management Bob Saril, and PLN finance director Sinthya Roesli were also present.

Royke said that the construction of the SPKLU is BNI's simple step to encourage the acceleration of the use of Battery-Based Electric Vehicles (KBLBB) in Indonesia, which will positively impact the nation's environment.

"This step is a joint commitment of BNI and PLN to support the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia proactively. We are also proud to say that BNI is the first bank in Indonesia to use the SPKLU Partnership Investor Own Investor Operate (IO2) cooperation scheme from PLN," he said.

Through this scheme, PLN acts as the owner of the SPKLU business and partners as business partners. The SPKLU Partnership IO2 scheme consists of three packages: the Medium Charger Package, the Fast Charger Package, and the Ultra Fast Charger Package.

In this program, PLN provides accessible ownership services and licensing to partners to run a business and improve the SPKLU ecosystem. The program also aligns with BNI as the first bank to provide a Payment channel (in this case, the Debit Card Payment Gateway) in the PLN Mobile Application for payment of electric vehicle charging using PLN's SPKLU.

The SPKLU development strengthens BNI's position as a company that deserves a high rating on the ESG assessment from MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International). BNI's current rating is A, the highest among Indonesian Banks.

As the holder of MSCI's best rating, BNI is not complacent. Before this, the company had also issued green bonds worth Rp5 trillion, preparing to strengthen environment-based financing.

The inaugurated SPKLU unit has three chargers: AC type with 22 kilo Watt (kW) power, DC CHAdeMo with 25 kW power, and DC CCS2 with 25 kW power. The AC type is often used for electric cars produced by European manufacturers, while the DC CHAdeMo type is for electric cars made by Asian and American manufacturers. The DC CCS2 type combines the two with the fast charging category. The management of the SPKLU placed at BNI will be managed based on the synergy between PLN's subsidiary and BNI's affiliated company, PT Grha Mitra Empatenam.

Royke continued, revealing that in the inauguration of SPKLU this time, BNI also presented the ease of ownership of Electric Vehicles through BNI consumer financing and BNI's subsidiary BNI Multifinance. BNI provides a unique scheme that is more attractive than conventional car financing.

Meanwhile, Darmawan appreciated BNI for acting as a frontline in the country's energy transition, especially its function as an intermediator. In just three months of cooperation discussions, BNI immediately realized the construction of SPKLU.

"Our step with BNI is also clear evidence to the world that Indonesia has moved quickly in the energy transition, especially switching from fossil-fueled cars to electric ones," Darmawan said.

Along with this SPKLU collaboration, PLN continues to run various other projects, which can be BNI's potential investment credit channel.

"Surely there will be more cooperation that we will continue with BNI. We have various investments with the spirit of fairness where the risk is well managed, and the rate of return is fair," Darmawan concluded.

BNI is classified as a bank in Indonesia that pays serious attention to environmental management. Various activities supported by BNI include environmental rehabilitation of Anyer Beach, Banten's coastal areas, and the upper reaches of the Citarum River Watershed, West Java, through the nursery development program, planting and maintaining trees in the area.
