Week-long International Olympiad in Informatics 2022 closes at Prambanan with a flourish The closing of IOI 2022 in Prambanan, Yogyakarta featured a colossal dance performance combined with video multimedia and spectacular fireworks, Sunday (8/14).

he 34th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) 2022 came to a close on Sunday at the Ramayana Ballet Prambanan complex in Yogyakarta. Participants and guests were treated to a spectacular view of the ancient Prambanan temple as they waited for the awarding ceremony.

For the past nine days, competitors from over 90 countries have participated in various sessions and challenges both online and offline. The international olympiad was attended by 536 participants, including 357 contestants and 179 leaders, team leaders, aides and guests. An overwhelming 414 participants attended the IOI offline while 122 participants joined the events virtually.

Most excitingly of all, the IOI this year awarded 180 medals, with 91 bronze, 59 silver and 30 gold medals. In addition, this year’s IOI is the first to feature an Honorable Mention category, which appreciates the hard work and outstanding achievements of 36 participants with high scores over several of the competition days.

The 2022 winners were surprisingly diverse, with winners from across the Middle East, Asia and Eastern Europe dominating the ranks. general assembly chairwoman of IOI 2022, Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Hayu, especially noted the number of female programmers that participated and  brought home gold medals.

“[To] female contestants, female team leaders – under-representation is a very real issue now. Grab whatever chance that comes your way and use it to pave the way for future generations, so they won’t have to go through the same hurdles that you experienced,” she remarked. “Be the role model that you need.”

IOI president Benjamin Burton announced two members of the IOI community as winners of the Distinguished Award. The award acknowledges the efforts of IOI members to spark positive changes behind the scenes. This year, the winners were Valentina Dagiené, president of the international initiative Bebras and a professor in informatics, and Arturo Cepeda Salinas, an IOI alumni who has dedicated his life to the organization of IOI events.

The hybrid IOI 2022 event bore the theme Digital Energy of Asia, to support the realization of Society 5.0 in which human life and digital technology are intertwined. The objectives of IOI itself reflect this commitment — first, to identify, encourage and challenge young people with great talents in the field of informatics, second, to build international friendships between scientists and computer educators, third, to introduce the discipline of informatics to young people; fourth, to promote informatics competitions in high schools and lastly, to encourage other countries to host future IOI competitions.

“For Indonesia, this event is not only an achievement, but also a means to grow literacy and numeracy skills (computational thinking) for Indonesian children in the context of Independent Learning," said Education, Culture, Technology, and Research Ministry secretary-general Suharti.

Indonesian participant and high school student Albert Yulius Ramahalim expressed his surprise at winning silver on the international “I didn’t think I could get to this point because there were so many stages from the city, province and national level until we’re selected as the team to represent Indonesia,” he said. “I hope that I’ve done the best I can for Indonesia and the Indonesian computer olympiad team who guided me all the way.”

During the occasion, Coordinating Minister for Human Development Muhadjir Effendy symbolically passed the baton to the host of 35th IOI 2023, Hungary. "Congratulations to Hungary as the next IOI organizer. Hopefully, this year's event can impart a lesson for next year's olympiad,"  he said in the final speech.

The 34th IOI competition was organized by the Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry in collaboration with partners including the Alumni Association of the Indonesian Computer Olympiad Team (TOKI), several supporting partners from industry, ministries and various agencies, the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta, state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and the provincial governments of Jakarta and Yogyakarta.
