merging artists Clasutta, Zita Nuella and Tusita Mangalani have banded together to hold the art exhibition Ad Maiora, touching on introspective themes of the self.
Running from July 13 to Aug. 1 at D Gallerie, South Jakarta, Ad Maiora is the trio’s first ever exhibition, taking its name from the Latin phrase “ad maiora natus sum” (we are born to aim for greater things).
“As newcomers, we are aware that our big aspirations in the arts must be accompanied by persistence. In the past year, we have learnt to overcome our differences and nurture our professional skills from small habits that we’ve worked and improved consistently,” Clasutta said.
The exhibition, which presents three individual series of paintings, utilizes the medium of oil, charcoal, acrylic, beads and embroidery as an extension of the intimate perspectives of each artist, from Clasutta’s personal observation on workplace routine, Zita Nuella’s introspective musings on loneliness and Tusita Mangalani’s way of dealing with intrusive thoughts.
Ad Maiora serves as the culmination of their year-long journey in the seventh Atreyu Moniaga Project’s (AMP) Mixed Feelings artist incubation program. The incubation process and exhibition of Atreyu Moniaga Project: Mixed Feelings – Ad Maiora involved Nin Djani, Wilhemus Willy, Venerdi Handoyo and Joshua Agustinus Andrias as collaborators.
In addition, the exhibition also marks a decade of AMP as an independent initiative with a mission to support young artists entering the arts and creative scene in Jakarta.
“As humans, we tend to be complacent and are afraid to have big ambitions because we feel like we are not good enough,” said Atreyu Moniaga, AMP’s founder and mentor. “I was reminded of the way true success is not solely measured by artistic prowess. Success is also determined by the courage to embrace personal growth – which means that we have to step out of our comfort zone and learn continuously to improve ourselves.”
