global CEO study conducted by the IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV) reported that as much as 75 percent of CEOs believe that enterprises equipped with the most advanced generative AI will gain significant competitive advantage. Meanwhile, 43 percent of CEOs have already implemented AI technology to help make strategic decisions. A handful of other leaders use the technology for operational decisions and implement AI into their products and services.

IBM presented the new enterprise-ready AI and data platform, watsonx, in Jakarta on Thursday, Aug. 8, at the flagship Think Experience and Tech Summit 2023. The event convened industry experts, business leaders and representatives of the government to explore the latest advancements in AI, with the hope that it can help Indonesian organizations accelerate growth.

“The government of Indonesia has outlined a roadmap for achieving and enabling holistic digital transformation to drive economic growth. To support this vision, a robust digital infrastructure and the adoption of digital technologies, such as automation and analytics, I envision will boost productivity and efficiency. I believe that organizations need to seriously consider incorporating AI into all their business processes and operations,” said Roy Kosasih, President Director of IBM Indonesia, one of the speakers at the event.

Attendees sat in on a dialogue focusing on the current state of AI adoption, as well as the academic collaborations and cross-sectoral partnerships vital to bolster the country’s AI-driven digital transformation.

“We need to thrive in this new era of AI with trust and transparency as our foundation. IBM strives to empower the government and businesses through the advanced watsonx AI platform, driving growth and competitiveness at this inflection point,” Roy added.

The newly launched watsonx provides businesses with self-service access to essential tools to improve operational efficiency, including infrastructure and consulting expertise. The platform was developed under the ethical principles that IBM adheres to, prioritizing data security and adaptability to the ever-changing legal and regulatory environments.

The models in watsonx ensure accuracy and prevent the generation of false information. In addition, the platform's security and automation features allow data scientists and developers to utilize governed enterprise data for training foundation models while addressing compliance and security across the data ecosystem.

PLN Icon Plus, a subsidiary of Indonesian state-owned enterprise Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), is leveraging IBM Maximo Application, becoming one of their most trusted clients.

The news was revealed by IBM at the Think Experience event. As one of IBM’s customers, PLN Icon Plus is utilizing AI technology to enhance the reliability of its operations and to increase its environmental responsibility commitment.

“We are embracing the transformative power of AI to bolster the power generation and distribution systems, while staying committed to our sustainability goals. We are confident the utilization of AI will support us in driving positive change, as part of our focus on sustainability practices for a brighter future,” said Ari Rahmat Indra Cahyadi, CEO of PLN Icon Plus. Ari also attended the event as one of the esteemed speakers.

In line with the country’s vision for the future, dubbed “Visi Indonesia Maju 2045,” the government is prioritizing the digitalization and equitable access to technology across the archipelago. To achieve this, access must be met with skills and the ability to utilize the technology that is offered.

Therefore, IBM has taken significant steps to prepare the country for the future, through the launch of programs like IBM SkillsBuild in disruptive technologies such as AI, which was done within the agreement signed earlier this year in Nongsa Digital Park, in Batam, Riau Islands province.

A report from IBV showed that 77 percent of entry-level workers will see their jobs change by 2025, based on the development of AI and its ability to play a central role in many workplaces. Therefore, in order to prepare younger generations to enter the workforce, an introduction to the AI-driven future is crucial.

“To help further enhance the country’s skills in IT and the digital space, IBM, through our collaboration with education partners and institutions, has nurtured the future work environment through a holistic approach that fosters access to both online and instructor-led classes, as well as hands-on workshops and real-life insights from experts. Through such collaboration with the education partners and institutions in February this year, the first batch of graduates have successfully attained credentials through programs like IBM SkillsBuild, in topics including AI and cybersecurity, as well as the Red Hat Certified System Administrator certification,” said Roy.

He added that the success of the first group inspired IBM to continue, with their next program catering to university students admitted to the Kampus Merdeka program, across all cities in Indonesia.
