T

he Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway (HSR) project is expected to serve just one-third of the passengers initially projected for its early months of operation because of limitations.

The latest projection is for passenger numbers to hover around 10,000 a day, according to a document seen by The Jakarta Post.

That number is a far cry from the 31,000 daily passengers projected by the University of Indonesia’s modeling provider, Polar UI, whose estimate was adopted by PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC), the consortium responsible for the project.

KCIC spokeswoman Eva Chairunisa told the Post on Sept. 6 that the company had never lowered its passenger target, saying its projection remained unchanged.

However, Eva admitted that the 31,000 figure was based on the assumption that the rail link would serve 68 trips a day, but the railway service would not provide that number of trips from the get-go.

“The company plans to increase the trips gradually. For instance, we might start at 20 or 30 trips. Therefore, the projected passenger target will have to be adjusted as well,” Eva said.

The Transportation Ministry said on Sept. 5 that the trains would serve eight trips a day in October before gradually climbing to 68 in January of next year, CNBC Indonesia reported.
