The finance minister says the container backlogs at the country’s two busiest ports have been mostly cleared following the latest revision to the new import rules, the third in as many months since the Trade Ministry's regulation went into effect on March 10.
he majority of the thousands of containers stuck at the ports of Tanjung Priok and Tanjung Perak has been resolved 10 days after relaxing newly revised import restrictions, the government says.
Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati told a press briefing on Monday that 62.3 percent of the 26,415-container backlog had been cleared, leaving fewer than 10,000 containers at the ports.
“What we want to rectify is the supply chain halting due to containers getting stuck. This of course affects production,” the minister said.
She noted that not all containers were simply cleared, however, since those that “contained risks, including for domestic industries” were still subject to scrutiny in line with the new rules.
Customs issues affecting a total of 16,451 containers had been “sorted out”, Sri Mulyani said, adding that the figure included 716 containers currently under the supervision of the Customs and Excise Office.
Sri Mulyani also explained that of the total figure, 9,444 containers were being processed at Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok and the remaining 7,007 containers at Surabaya’s Tanjung Perak, the country’s busiest and second-busiest ports, respectively.
Tanjung Priok originally had a backlog of 17,304 containers, out of which only 7,726 are currently left to process, while Tanjung Perak had a backlog of 9,111 containers, with 2,079 containers now remaining.
