Indonesia to roll out QRIS in Japan on Aug. 17

Alongside the launch of QRIS in Japan on Independence Day, the central bank plans to start testing the digital payment system for future implementation in China.

ank Indonesia (BI) has announced that the Quick Response Indonesia Standard (QRIS) will be available for making payments in Japan on the country’s 80th independence anniversary, provided that no “big hurdle” occurs.

BI Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta told a press conference on Wednesday that the central bank and Japan’s financial services authority had tested the QRIS system last week in a controlled environment, a process also known as sandboxing.

“So Indonesians who go to Japan can make payments by scanning QR [codes] in Japan,” said Filianingsih, starting on Aug. 17, when it planned to test QRIS in China concurrently with the launch in Japan.

She added that the process for implementing the system in China, particularly in terms of business, technical and operational arrangements, was now being finalized by the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI) and China’s UnionPay International.

Four local payment service providers – PT Rintis Sejahtera, PT Alto Network, PT Artajasa Pembayaran Elektronis and PT Jalin Pembayaran Nusantara – have an agreement with UnionPay International to create a sandbox testing platform, namely.
