ndependent label Grieve Records is slated to launch the first volume of a new series of compilation albums titled Noise Assault at the end of this month, though no release date has been set.

Featuring 18 bands from cities in Greater Jakarta and Java, including Cikarang, Bandung, Blora, Sidoarjo, Yogyakarta and Surabaya, the compilation album aims to reflect the current underground scene. It highlights sounds across diverse genres, ranging from garage/punk rock bands Elektre, Succubus and Asylum Uniform, the abrasive hardcore music of groups like Knife, Speed X and Ratrace, as well as the noisepop and shoegaze sounds of Sunlotus, Enola and Morgensoll.

Completing the tracks remastered by engineer Andry “Joe” Novaliano are the artwork of Tekknovoid, while music journalists Yudhistira Agato, Reno Surya and Abdul Manann Rasudi contributed to the album’s liner notes.

“It all started in June 2021, when we asked our social media followers to recommend new bands. We were surprised when our followers mentioned many great bands that were outside our radar,” Grieve Records cofounder Uri Putra told The Jakarta Post.

So Uri decided to curate a compilation to introduce the “newfound” gems. Assisted by fellow label runners Sayiba Bajumi and Saiful Haq, Uri listened to 40 bands to shortlist them according to a number of criteria, including the recording quality.

“There are so many bands we want to release, but we are short on money. So a compilation album is the solution to [...] introduce these many great bands,” Uri explained.

Noise Assault Vol. 1 will be released on CD for Rp 55,000 (US$3.84). Music lovers can preorder the compilation by direct messaging Grieve Record on Instagram. The label plans to follow up with successive volumes of Noise Assault to introduce other nonmainstream bands.

Uri founded Grieve Records with Sayiba in 2011 to release the music of their bands, horror punk group Kelelawar Malam (“fruit bat”) and post-metal act Ghaust, which disbanded in 2016 after drummer Edward "Edo" Predico was killed in a tragic accident.

Grieve, which shares space with underground concert venue Rossi Musik in South Jakarta, has also released the music of underground acts like rock bands Oath, Ssslothhh, Ora Iso and Candlegoat, as well as that of hip-hop group Homicide in collaboration with Bandung-based Grimloc Records. It has also organized dozens of concerts for bands touring Jakarta, including Western punk bands Doom and Tragedy.
