ith a reboot of the popular 2000s TV show Sex and the City (SATC) confirmed, fans can’t help but wonder how the show writers will explain the absence of Samantha Jones. Kim Cattrall, the actress who played Sam for the show’s six seasons and two feature films, has refused to reprise her role in the upcoming 10-episode limited series And Just Like That.

After months of wild theories suggesting that Sam was killed off or will be played by another actress, it was recently revealed that the PR maverick will be written off as living her best life in London.

“We couldn't have Samantha roaming around New York City and not have the other women [Charlotte and Miranda] not interacting with her. It just wouldn't have made sense,” an anonymous source claimed to be an insider of the show told DailyMail.com (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10222321/Sex-City-reboot-moves-Kim-Cattralls-characters-overseas.html). “Sending her to Los Angeles wasn't an option, as we'd done that in the first movie, so having her character based in London really was the perfect way to keep her alive and explain her absence.”

Sending Sam overseas would be more convenient for future writing if any sequels of And Just Like That were to be made. The source said the team still hoped that Cattrall would change her mind and eventually make a comeback to the SATC universe.

“We have high hopes that by the time we begin filming the second season, Kim will have joined the show and Samantha Jones can make a triumphant return to the big apple,” the source said. “We want Kim back. She was missed on set. We all understand why she feels the way she does. We get it. We just want her to come back for future seasons.”

Although the writers have left the plot open for Sam’s return, Cattrall famously gave a hard "no" to the reboot after she completed filming of the show’s feature film sequel Sex and the City 2 in 2010. Arguing that there is no more story to tell about Sam, Cattrall lamented that she had been framed as the antagonist for knowing what she wanted and being firm to defend her needs.

“It’s quite extraordinary to get any kind of negative press about something that I’ve been saying for almost a year of ‘no’ that I’m demanding or a diva,” she said during an appearance on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories in 2016. “The answer was always no and a respectful [and] firm ‘no’. I never asked for any money, I never asked for any projects. To be thought of as some kind of diva is ridiculous.”

A respected businesswoman and an unabashed lover of sex, Samantha Jones is a show stealer and oftentimes credited as the character who puts the "sex" in Sex and the City. Her many sexual adventures are arguably the fans' favorite part of the show. As the oldest of the quartet, Sam is often depicted as being protective of the other characters: Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York. Though outspoken and promiscuous, she is often depicted as motherly and caring to her three best friends. For her fun and playful portrayal of the character, Cattrall received two Screen Actors Guild Awards and a Golden Globe Award.

The other stars of the show, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, are reprising their roles as a trio of 50-something women. Other familiar faces from the series will also make an appearance, including Carrie’s best friend, Stanford, played by the late Willie Garson who passed away earlier this year. And Just Like That will be available for streaming on HBO Max starting on Dec. 9.
