aramount Pictures has announced that Francis Ford Coppola’s magnum opus The Godfather will return to selected theaters to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The film, along with its two sequels, is already restored into 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray. Paramount Pictures released a new trailer of the restored version on its official YouTube channel on Jan. 13.

Paramount confirmed that the film will be shown on the silver screen at selected Dolby Cinema and AMC theaters in the United States, as well as in international territories around the world, on Feb. 25. All three of the films will also be available digitally by March 22.

Coppola himself directed the restoration, a lengthy project that included 1,000 hours of color correction and restoration of the original mono tracks.

An adaptation of Mario Puzo’s novel of the same name, the first installment of The Godfather trilogy was released in 1972, followed by sequels in 1974 and 1990. The films followed the rise and fall of the mafia family Corleone under the ruling patriarch Vito Corleone and his heir Michael Corleone. The blood-drenched trilogy became an important milestone for the now legendary actors Al Pacino and Robert de Niro. The trilogy also stars important names such as Marlon Brando, Diane Keaton and James Caan.

As one of the most iconic cinematic works depicting the Italian American community, it also serves as a staple, although probably not the most accurate, Italian American trope for the world. Gaining financial and critical acclaim, the success of the trilogy positioned the Coppola family and its relatives as an important powerhouse in Hollywood.
