The Jakarta Post’s “20 Questions” is a new Q&A column in which we talk to the country’s most intriguing and notable individuals, from artists, celebrities, academics and activists to students, leaders, entrepreneurs and “ordinary” people.

Youth employment is one of the key topics discussed at the G20 this year, with a focus on current issues including the importance of social safety nets for informal and nonstandard employment, as well as youth social entrepreneurship.

The Jakarta Post spoke to three individuals who are playing a big part in this year’s G20 Youth 20 (Y20): Sheilla Njoto, Sous-Chair of the Youth Employment Track, Marshiella Pandji, delegate for Youth Employment delegate and Angelo Wijaya, head of Y20 Project Management & Research.

Question: Can you tell us a little about the background of Y20? How was it established and why?

Angelo Wijaya (AW): The first Y20 was held in Russia in 2013. It was established to provide a platform and space for young people to channel their opinions, concerns and voices on the issues that matter to them, especially related to matters decided by the government.

Sheila Njoto (SN): We want to listen to marginalized youths [aged 18-30] over the struggles they are facing. There are continuing topics [that were] discussed in the previous G20. For example, since we’re still in the pandemic this year, we discuss how the pandemic affects youths’ employment track.

Can you tell us about the goals and programs for this year’s Y20?
