Maybank Indonesia’s green gesture: 2,000 mangrove seedlings planted in Sustainability Day

R

enowned for their carbon-sequestration benefits and their ability to maintain biodiversity, mangroves have taken the spotlight in Indonesia’s greener future.

In conjunction with the Maybank Marathon 2023, Maybank Indonesia is envisioning center stage for mangroves beyond the power of protecting coastlines from erosion.

This will hit two birds with one stone through a health-empowering activity and passing the finish line as one of Indonesias green heroes.

Some 2,000 mangrove seedlings were planted within the serene Mangrove Arboretum Park, nestled in the heart of Tanjung Benoa, Bali, actualizing the company’s mission to humanize financial services. Budhi Dyah Sitawati, independent commissioner of Maybank Indonesia, conveyed the company’s commitment to ensuring every step taken aligns with the global sustainability agenda.

“Today’s mangrove seedling planting is not just a symbol, but a representation of Maybank Indonesia’s tangible action in realizing the Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs],” said Budhi.

According to Budhi, this initiative reflects the commitment to achieving and contributing to several crucial SDGs, including actions to address climate change, maintain underwater ecosystem balance, and build partnerships to achieve these goals.

For Maybank Indonesia, looking ahead has never been more real than now.

The company’s significant stride toward a greener future is the journey of today. The Maybank Group itself has set four main sustainability targets: Firstly, mobilizing 80 billion ringgit until 2025, which has been a progressive process as it disbursed 38.8 billion ringgit in 2022 with a focus on renewable energy investments and low-carbon solutions.

It is hoped that this initiative can strengthen coastal ecosystems and provide a long-term positive impact, which brings about the second target of improving the quality of life.

Improving the quality of life for 2 million households in the ASEAN region is another ongoing journey for the company. Looking back on 2022 with a heartening achievement, the Maybank Group successfully assisted 969,091 households through the Reach Independence & Sustainable Entrepreneurship (RISE) program.

The importance of diversity is also further crystalized in RISE as it has implemented beyond 19,000 program participants across ASEAN including more than 30 RISE program participants from Bali who will participate in the Maybank Marathon 2023’s wheelchair category on Aug. 27. A better life for all also means a better atmosphere, which brings the third goal of achieving carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, which further echoes its resolute commitment to curbing 41 percent of emissions in 2022.

.

The strides toward the mission is undeniable.

Maybank Indonesia has always set its heart on creating a sustainable future for all. By dedicating 1 million hours annually to sustainability and actualizing a thousand significant SDG outcomes by 2025, with the fourth and final goal as testimonial to the company’s dedication.

“We believe that sustainability is key to achieving sustainable business growth and, on the other hand, creating lasting positive value for our stakeholders. By planting mangroves in Bali, this further reaffirms Maybank’s commitment to and implementation of sustainability initiatives and showcases our leadership in driving more sustainable practices, especially in the banking industry,” explained Shahril Azuar Jimin, chief sustainability officer of the Maybank Group.

Shahril explained the mission of Maybank’s efforts toward sustainable business, consistently ensuring that business growth should not only contribute financially, but also to society, the environment and you.

Synchronizing with the Maybank Marathon Bali 2023, Maybank Indonesia, through the Maybank Indonesia Foundation, initiated the mangrove-planting donation program. The initiative empowered Maybank Marathon participants to actively contribute to carbon-emission reduction, displaying the synergy between the bank’s values and the event’s essence.

There was also a talk show hosted by an Indonesian state-owned financial services institution, Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM), discussing the betterment of our nation’s future. This was highlighted earlier in August when Rp 1 trillion was provided by Maybank Indonesia to support financing of underprivileged female micro-entrepreneurs, in line with the value of achieving sustainability for not only the environment, but also society.

The MyClothes4U program, is also one of Maybank Indonesia’s contribution to a greener future by urging race participants to contribute pre-owned, wearable running attire and shoes. The donations will benefit the National Movement of Foster Parents (GNOTA) and RISE program participants through the Disabled Empowerment Center (PUSPADI).

The Maybank Marathon 2023 stands as a testament to Maybank Indonesia’s leadership in steering colorful changes for the world of finance and beyond.
