T Bank Maybank Indonesia Tbk (“Maybank Indonesia”) is set to host the Elite Label Road Race Maybank Marathon 2024 on August 25, 2024, featuring several updates.
Maybank Indonesia's President Director, Steffano Ridwan, stated that for its 13th edition, the Maybank Marathon continues to mark milestones with its running activities themed ‘Discover a New You,’ a new event location, and an enhanced commitment to sustainability in line with the strategic direction of the Maybank Group, including various sustainability initiatives involving runners.
“As the first and only Elite Road Race in Indonesia, the Maybank Marathon provides a platform for the community and running enthusiasts to test their abilities and achieve their best performances. This requires dedication and perseverance from the runners to advance through the various race categories featured in our event,” Steffano explained on Saturday (August 24).
On Sunday morning, the first flag-off will be at 4:30 AM WITA for the Marathon category, the second at 5:30 AM WITA for the Half Marathon category, and the third at 6:00 AM WITA for the 10K category. Subsequent flag-offs include the wheelchair category (3K) at 6:10 AM WITA and the children’s sprint at 8:00 AM WITA. The total prize pool is IDR 2.7 billion, distributed among 86 winners, including record breakers.
Maybank Marathon Project Director, Widya Permana, mentioned that the team is prepared to host the race with the start and finish lines at the Bali United Training Center in Gianyar. “We are very enthusiastic about holding the Maybank Marathon at this new location, which we hope will provide a unique experience for all our participants this year,” she said.
The Maybank Marathon 2024 will feature over 12,700 participants from 57 countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, the United States, and other countries in Asia, Europe, and Africa. Foreign participants make up 12.7% of the total, with 1 in 8 participants being international.
This year, the number of Marathon participants has increased by 17% to 3,500, the highest number for this category in Indonesian running events. According to Widya, this increase aligns with the ‘Discover a New You’ theme, reflecting the growing number of runners ready to tackle the 42-kilometer challenge.
In line with the ‘Discover a New You’ spirit, the Maybank Marathon 2024 will feature a race for 25 invited Indonesian Marathon runners (outside PASI invitations) who have qualified as ‘Maybank Marathon Indonesian Fast Runners 2024’ based on their performances in the Maybank Marathon 2022 and 2023. These 25 runners will compete to meet the Boston Marathon qualifying time at the Maybank Marathon 2024 and have the chance to participate in and win the #BaliBeatsBoston raffle, which will select two male and two female Marathon runners to be sent to the Boston Marathon 2025.
To raise awareness, particularly among participants of the Maybank Marathon 2024, about actively contributing to reducing the event’s environmental and community impact in Bali, Maybank Indonesia is implementing 13 sustainability initiatives. These include mangrove planting at Benoa Arboretum, the inauguration of an Eco-village organic waste management project in Gianyar, and other initiatives focusing on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspects such as shoe donation and auctioning, the use of reusable silicon cups, and the provision of solar-powered charging stations.
Additionally, the Maybank Marathon 2024 features the Run For Charity program, allowing Marathon runners to run while donating. As of the press conference, donations collected have reached IDR 438,534,148 from 23 Marathon Run For Charity participants, which will be distributed to recipients through partners of Maybank Marathon 2024.
For race execution, the Maybank Marathon 2024 committee has deployed a security team around the route consisting of approximately 795 police officers and around 450 Gianyar community members. For medical facilities, the committee has deployed 900 marshals and 265 paramedics, along with 39 ambulances, including 18 ambulance cars, 18 motorcycle ambulances, and two Emergency Room standard ambulances.
“Safety and security of all participants are our priority for every Maybank Marathon. In addition to the security team and paramedics, we are also deploying 49 pacers trained in First Aid Emergency CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) procedures in case of emergencies,” said Widya.
Similar to a World Marathon Majors event, Maybank Marathon 2024 will feature 12 international elite runners (six men and six women) from Kenya and Uganda, and 10 national marathon runners (five men and five women).
