Quiet anticipation filled the Artisan Lounge at the Discovery Ancol hotel in North Jakarta as William Tristan Mahendra stood up, straightened his black suit and walked to the podium. He adjusted the microphone, glanced at his notes and began presenting his assigned country’s perspective on current global issues.
The 14-year-old’s arguments were clear and structured, delivered in fluent English and a steady voice. Across the room, fellow delegates leaned in to listen while a committee leadership observed closely.
This was the scene at the Model United Nations (Model UN) simulation organized on Jan. 28 by International Global Network (IGN), an educational organization based in Jakarta, as part of its 10th anniversary events.
William has taken part in multiple conferences, including the 11th edition of Asia World Model United Nations (AWMUN) in Seoul and its 12th edition in Bali, which ran consecutively in October 2025. Most recently, he participated in the 20th Asia Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) on Jan. 16-19 in Kuala Lumpur. He was awarded Best Delegate at all three, where he represented the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the WHO and UNICEF, respectively.
“William was originally very shy,” said his mother, Meidia Safitri.
