Conrad Bali and Hilton Bali Resort collaborated on Sunday for the sixth edition of Bali’s Biggest Cleanup.
Organized by Bali-based network One Island Voice, the cleanup drew 12,500 participants, including from corporations and NGOs. Conrad Bali and Hilton Bali contributed 25 and 41 of their team members, respectively. The two hotels have been taking a more environmentally friendly approach in recent years.
“Conrad Bali plays a significant part in conserving our environment, which we have begun to do by decreasing our reliance on single-use plastics across the resort. For a number of years already, we have discontinued the usage of plastic straws, substituting paper straws on request and wooden stirrers where necessary, as well as replacing plastic water bottles in guest rooms with reusable glass ones,” explained Kevin Girard, general manager of Conrad Bali.
"Beach cleaning is embedded in our resort's culture, with team members cleaning the beach daily,” said Amit Sakhrani, general manager of Hilton Bali Resort. “Today is more than just another cleanup; it is part of our commitment, along with our stakeholders, to raising awareness about the dangers of debris on our beautiful beach and to inspire people to take action to passionately protect our unique environment and marine life by reducing their reliance on single-use plastics.”
The campaign’s mission is to clean up the island’s common waste items, including plastic, glass, fishing nets, cigarette buds and metal debris. This is the first Bali’s Biggest Cleanup event following a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic. At the end of the day, the group successfully collected 184 kilograms of plastic waste that otherwise would have been discarded into the ocean.
