Mahkota Giovey Abadi empowers scavengers, takes part in coping with plastic waste issue

As a country with the world’s fourth largest population, Indonesia produces the most mismanaged plastic waste.

According to indonesia.go.id, Indonesia’s population of 270 million has produced 67.8 tonnes of plastic waste, or 185,753 tonnes of plastic waste per day.

PT Mahkota Giovey Abadi, producer of plastic bottle packaging, underscores the implementation of a circular economy as it not only wants to raise public awareness about the importance of recycling plastic waste but also brings benefits to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Producers are accountable for the plastic waste consumed by consumers and therefore, Mahkota Giovey Abadi asks various stakeholders in Indonesia to implement the extended producer responsibility concept.

Mahkota Giovey Abadi and its partners produce plastic bottles made of recycled PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) or plastic waste that can be recycled to become new drinking bottles repeatedly.

In collaboration with its affiliated organizations, the company has empowered nearly 10,000 scavengers to supply used bottles to the company’s recycling plant as part of their efforts to participate in coping with plastic waste issues.

Mahkota Giovey Abadi’s customers, particularly MSMEs, vary the use of plastic bottles, for example as containers for herbs, cendol (a traditional dessert), mushroom sauces and black pepper.

Following the success of producing 1-liter plastic bottles, Mahkota Giovey Abadi further developed products with a range of capacity: from 1 liter up to 60Ml for the F & B industry.

The 1-liter bottle products, which are more economical, are beneficial to MSMEs. This has spurred MSME growth, which means providing job opportunities.

These kinds of products are sought after by consumers at market platforms, from big coffee shops to retail outlets.

Hilary Ignatius Kenneth Permana, founder and CEO of Mahkota Giovey Abadi, says in the past there was a negative stigma attached to the utilization of the recycled products, especially prior to the presence of travel pack plastic bottles that the company produced. With this technology, plastic bottles can be recycled and converted into food grade. “Our clients love the idea because today’s consumers have turned to recycled products. To raise public awareness about the importance of utilizing recycled products calls for collaboration from various elements of society,” he says.

Mahkota Giovey Abadi continues to promote a sense of pride in utilizing 100 percent recycled products not only for coffee but also other products. The plastic bottle packaging can help cope with the plastic issue in Indonesia. The company targets to produce up to 20 million bottles in various forms of packaging.
