LSPR Institute spotlights kebaya, traditional textiles with BinarGala

A

s part of its efforts to promote the preservation of Indonesian culture among the younger generation, the LSPR Institute held an event titled BinarGala at Dia.Lo.Gue Artspace, Jl. Kemang Selatan 99 A, Jakarta.

As the main event organized by LSPR Institute students majoring in marketing communications, batch 24, BinarGala presented a series of activities including discussions, fashion shows, workshops, entertainment, installations and bazaars.

The event followed activities such as the “Potret Kebaya” and “Tantangan Potret Kebaya” kebaya-themed social media photography movements as well as the “Suara Kebaya” event held in collaboration with the LSPR choir, before ending with a charity event for the Baduy tribe.

BinarGala aims to break the stigma around the kebaya and raise awareness of the traditional garment and cultural heritage among the younger generation aged 17-25 years, more popularly known as Gen Z.

With the theme “various colors”, the event was held in collaboration with the Perempuan Berkebaya Indonesia (PBI) community, who are often involved in introducing the kebaya through cultural events, fashion exhibitions and tourist activities.

“Some Gen Z think that the kebaya is an old-fashioned item of clothing. In fact, the kebaya is a high-value part of the cultural heritage. Gen Z must have the awareness to preserve it," said PBI chair Rahmi Hidayati.

"I really support this activity, especially since the initiators are LSPR students who are Gen Z. These students also have concerns, so they plan to make donations to the Baduy tribe," she concluded proudly.

Rahmi also highlighted the PBI community’s Kebaya Goes to Campus campaign in a talk show with fashion stylist Kudil and owner of the kebayales.tantun brand Arbida Nila. The discussion provided the audience with insights into the kebaya along with raising support for Kebaya Goes to Campus.

Within the event, three types of kebaya were displayed as part of an interactive installation; kebaya encim, kebaya kutu baru and kebaya Kartini.

"Through this installation, we try to depict the long and inspiring history of the kebaya with outfit ideas that use kebayas. Each installation is equipped with a barcode that can be scanned to obtain in-depth information about the historical background of the kebaya and its various varieties," said Syarifah Khadidjah Ali Assegaf, chairman of BinarGala.

In addition, BinarGala also organizes workshops aimed at helping the younger generation to start wearing traditional textiles in various social settings.

"Another goal is to learn various techniques in using traditional textiles, mixing and matching with various types of clothing, and preserving Indonesian textile culture," added Nazla Putri Ganinda, head of the events division.

Aside from the workshop, the fashion show also provided a stylish visualization with kebaya and batik cloth among Gen Z, working with brands which include PBI's internal brands, namely Aura Kebaya, Nanunisa and Arsita Craft. In addition, there were other collaborations such as with Jamong Atelier, Nona Rara Batik and Riska Vebrie.

The main event closed with entertainment from the LSPR band and Bagas Fatah, a 23-year-old TikTok musician and content creator who focuses his music career as a soloist on the folk pop genre, along with being active in the creative industry.
