elebrating Indonesia's 78th Independence Day on August 17, 2023, PT Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM) went beyond festivities. They transformed the occasion into a meaningful endeavor by planting 22,000 mangrove trees across three cities: Makassar, Banjarmasin, and Mataram. This initiative aimed to inspire a better environment.
These city choices were strategic, driven by the sizable number of PNM Mekaar customers. The mangrove trees were planted along the coastlines of Pantai Cemare in Lembar District, West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara; Untia Beach in Makassar; and Sungai Bakau Village in Kurau Subdistrict, Tanah Laut Regency, South Kalimantan.
Makassar alone has 4,800 customers with outstanding loans totaling IDR 15.7 billion. "In NTB, PNM has facilitated 27,696 PNM Mekaar customers in group efforts," stated PNM's CEO, Arief Mulyadi.
Environmental issues such as limited greenery, erosion, pollution, and coastal disaster risks are common. Arief believes that any contribution to the environment, no matter how small, benefits life. "Mangroves are incredibly beneficial, not just for the environment but also for humans. Especially now, with worsened air quality due to pollution. This is our effort to create multiple positive effects for the environment, economy, and health," Arief emphasized.
Arief hopes this greening initiative will contribute to improved oxygen supply, better air quality, and the stabilization of coastal ecosystems while also providing an economic boost to local communities. "Coastal residents, primarily fishermen, can benefit from marine life seeking refuge in mangrove roots during low tides, whether for consumption or sale," he concluded.
Mangrove planting requires collective attention to ensure healthy growth for future generations. Furthermore, the use of mangrove trees must be wise to avoid damaging the mangrove ecosystem.
