Science stimulates the natural curiosity that drives and inspires us to discover the mysteries of the world around us.
When we take science and eco-friendly activities into action, it helps us to think critically and gain awareness about how and why things function. Additionally, today’s learners will develop an appreciation for skepticism as we have grown up in an increasingly technological world – especially in the peak of global warming.
However, a 2019 study conducted by Ramdhan, et al. noted how various regions of Indonesia still lacked high-quality environmental education, as the subject is not compulsory in schools.
The environment is at the forefront of shaping the human mindset, which brings LOTTE Chemical Corporation’s first corporate social responsibility (CSR) project with an overseas local government to attention.
On Aug. 30, PT LOTTE Chemical Indonesia (LCI) demonstrated its commitment to integrating environmental literacy into the language-learning process in Indonesia. Through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing with Cilegon mayor Helldy Agustian, accompanied by LCI president director Yim Dong Hee and LCI communications division head Choi Young Kwang, a large-scale petrochemical complex is set to be built.
“LOTTE Chemical is carrying out a large-scale project with high growth potential in Indonesia. Starting with this social contribution, the MoU with Cilegon city, Indonesia, we will continue to expand corporate social responsibility not only in Korea, but also in overseas communities,” said LCI vice chairman Kim Gyo Hyun.
As much as the environment is able to shape humans, we as humans can also shape the environment, our world, including our society.
Through this MoU, LCI will cooperate with the city to establish high-quality education primarily in the science and environmental sectors.
Beyond establishing high-quality education for schools in Cilegon, LCI highlights the importance of having collective cultural strengthening efforts by providing local resources. This is reiterated through the company’s proactive social contribution activities, which include agricultural water support in Indonesia, breast cancer screening support for low-income women in Malaysia, redefining fire station facilities in Hungary and more.
We can, therefore, conclude not only that scientific literacy is important but that spotlighting the well-being of the environment, women and children and the local community are too, which make up the three focused themes for LCI.
Moreover, Kim stated that LCI had evaluated Indonesia’s high potential for growth and noted that the company’s large-scale project brought continuity to expand it further.
“We will expand that,” he said.
Efforts such as installing facilities for environmental protection and resident participation programs will help strengthen Cilegon’s resource virtuous cycle system while providing equipment and tools for elementary schools.
LCI also envisions the development of new educational content for middle schools and specialized programs for university students that will include the provision of expert mentoring. As a company that sees the sky as the limit, LCI even runs internships for 10 students every month in Indonesia.
Elevating educational environments hits two birds with one stone, as the promotion of local communities’ environmental awareness will also be attained. These programs provide opportunities for learners to study safety, health and the environment while working at the company.
As a company that aims to strengthen its market dominance in Southeast Asia, LCI has an optimistic purpose not only for the world but also for its project headlines.
The large-scale petrochemical complex development project is called the LINE Project and has a goal of commercial production by 2025 with a total project cost of US$3.9 billion. And as mentioned, construction is underway.
By providing educational supplies, specialized programs and diverse care for various demographics of Southeast Asia through the LINE Project, LCI is at the forefront of redefining our Cilegon’s educational infrastructure and resource virtuous cycle, not only with strength but local communal wisdom through environmental learning.
