SMOD Jakarta’s annual Creative Show returned for 2023 with a twist, breaking away from its previous indoor shows for an outdoor presentation complete with a long runway.

Held at Tribeca Park in Jakarta’s Central Park Mall, the Creative Show 2023 did not have an overarching theme, allowing ESMOD Jakarta graduates to showcase their creations according to their respective visions.

A total of 222 looks were shown during the presentation, made up of the collections of 89 ESMOD Jakarta graduates from three study programs: Fashion Design and Creation, Fashion Design and Pattern Making, and International Fashion Business.

"As experienced fashion educators, we showcased these works to share with the public popular fashion trends, with the hope that these amazing works can be used by the public to meet their needs in the fashion world," said Nathalia Gunaria, academic program manager of ESMOD Jakarta.

Guillaume Oger, ESMOD Jakarta head of curriculum development section explained that the materials used by the graduates ranged from traditional textiles such as tenun or batik to sportswear materials such as scuba, nylon, knitwear and technical fabrics, which have functions such as cooling fiber or anti-UV.

“In addition, you will find many embellishments and fabric manipulations that utilize various techniques and present the uniqueness of the works, while also highlighting innovative pattern-making techniques such as zero waste or one-cut patterns,” he said.

"These works are closely related to the role of technology and conceptual design, for example with the use of 3D printing to the use of social media as promotional media, with the development process taking into account the interests and needs of society."

Alongside the fashion presentation, four ESMOD Jakarta graduates were selected as Coup De Coeur De Jury (Jury’s Favorite), with the award chosen directly by 42 professional jury members from various industries at the Jury Day event. The participating judges included photographer Darwis Triadi, ESMOD Jakarta alumnae and fashion designers Eri Dani, Rama Dauhan and Yogie Pratama, fashion designer and adviser for Laire and Louis Vuitton Galuh Nurita, as well as creative director and fashion designer Toton Januar.

Alce, ESMOD Jakarta’s director of development, said the institution was currently researching the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and releasing an ESMOD Jakarta alumni website which will make it easier for all ESMOD Jakarta alumni to connect with each other, digitally displaying their portfolios publicly.

“For external parties who want to collaborate or look for candidates to fill positions in their company, [the process] can be made easier with this website."

ESMOD Jakarta is also the first fashion school to enter the virtual realm in the form of the metaverse in Indonesia, in collaboration with Nusameta. During the event, some of the works of ESMOD Jakarta graduates in 2022 were displayed in digital versions on LED screens. By 2024, ESMOD Jakarta aims to have its students ready to create digital works from their collections.

At the same time, ESMOD Jakarta is also collaborating with TikTok and is campaigning online with the hashtag #ESMODDesignersOnTikTok, where the general public can see behind-the-scenes videos of each work displayed during and after the Creative Show.
