Indonesian high schoolers convene at MISMUN 2024 to tackle global issues Sasha Moein, deputy secretary-general of the Mentari Intercultural School Model United Nations 2024 (MISMUN 2024), delivers his opening remarks on Jan. 27, the first day of the two-day conference held at the Mentari Intercultural School Jakarta campus in South Jakarta.

entari Intercultural School Jakarta (MISJ) hosted the prestigious Mentari Intercultural School Model United Nations 2024 (MISMUN 2024) on Jan. 27 to 28, attracting over 200 students to take part in the simulation of a United Nations conference.

MISMUN 2024, one of MISJ’s largest student-organized events, was organized by the school’s Model United Nations Club (MUN Club) and included participants, known as delegates, from various nations to participate in negotiations, deliver speeches, learn about geopolitics and global diplomacy, and work together to solve global problems.

This year's MISMUN, now in its fifth iteration, marked a milestone as the biggest MISMUN conference in the history of MISJ.

Led by MISMUN Secretary-General Ahmad Moqtav Hidayat and Deputy Secretary-General Sasha Moein, the conference saw the participation of delegates from 20 senior high schools in Greater Jakarta and Bandung. In addition, in response to large demand and to accommodate more participants, MISMUN 2024 marked the establishment of a new council modeled on the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP).

Along with the newly established UNEP, the event involved four other councils: the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UNWOMEN), the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Delegates on these five councils tackled major global issues such as sex trafficking, peace and security in Africa’s Sahel region, crimes against journalists and enhancing the economic well-being of minority groups.

MISMUN 2024 aimed to provide a platform for senior high school students to engage in diplomatic discussions and contribute to finding solutions for current global challenges.

Delegates on the ECOSOC council discussed the economic challenges faced by minorities as well as inequity and the fulfillment of basic human needs.

The discussion took an interesting turn with the introduction of a shadow delegate from Canada, who questioned the proposed solutions in the council’s draft resolution. Despite constant criticism, the delegate from Russia made constructive suggestions that ultimate led to the passage of the draft resolution.

Rama Husodo and Alif Prasetia, respectively the ECOSOC Head Chair and Co-chair, said they were proud about the productive discussions and collaboration among the delegates, adding that it one of the most successful councils they had chaired.
