rom electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure to geothermal power plants, Indonesia is seeking to pivot to cleaner energy sources and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
Though the government has revised its new and renewable energy (NRE) targets to 17-19 percent by 2025 and 19-21 percent by 2030, state-owned electricity giant PLN recorded that renewable energy certification (REC) in 2023 reached 3.08 terawatt hour (TWh), an increase of 75 percent from 2022.
In addition to industrial and personal use, the switch to renewable energy can also be seen in commercial spaces. For example, the Sentral Senayan Office Towers in Central Jakarta, in an effort to reduce CO2 emissions, has utilized renewable energy through the installation of a rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system in quarter three of 2023 and provide a renewable energy certification (REC) scheme for their tenants.
The Sentral Senayan Office Towers are located in the Senayan Square complex, Jakarta's first multipurpose development located in the green and sporting environment of Gelora Bung Karno. The towers comprise Mall Plaza Senayan, Sentral Senayan Office Towers, Apartemen Plaza Senayan and Hotel Fairmont Jakarta.
The Solar PV system was installed on the top floor of annex car park 1 of Sentral Senayan Office Towers and began producing renewable energy for Sentral Senayan Office Towers in December 2023 with a total capacity of 334 kilowatt peak (kWp), that can generate a maximum green energy of 1,200 KWh/day depending on weather conditions, which can cover electricity consumption in approximately 7,200 square meters of office-lease area in both Sentral Senayan I and Sentral Senayan II.
PT Senayan Trikarya Sempana (STS), the developer of Senayan Square, received financing support from the Japanese government through a joint crediting mechanism (JCM) model project, which aims to contribute to sustainable development in Indonesia by using high-efficiency air conditioning systems and solar PV system that reduces carbon emissions.
In addition to the solar PV system, in cooperation with The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc from Japan, STS also organized the provisions for environment certification from International-Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC), allowing Sentral Senayan Office Towers tenants to treat their electricity consumption as renewable energy electricity with zero CO2 emissions.
The I-REC scheme supports the global corporates to meet their policy or commitment for sustainable activities, since I-REC certification is widely accepted and acknowledged by major international reporting frameworks to measure and manage greenhouse gas emissions, such as the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and RE100.
Kazuhito Shibuya, president director of STS, told The Jakarta Post that STS, as part of Kajima Corporation Japan, had been developing Senayan Square with a green conscience and pursues environmentally friendly buildings in a continuous effort to reduce CO2 emissions in Indonesia.
“As part of the commitment, the first constructed office tower, Sentral Senayan I, has been assessed to figure out the required improvements to become more environmentally friendly, and is currently in progress of receiving Greenship Certification from the Green Building Council of Indonesia (GBCI),” he said.
