Mowilex’s low-impact recycled paints arrive in Indonesia

Key news highlights:

  • The innovative new product line, Mowilex Recycled, contains up to 40% premium recycled paint per 2.5-liter pail.
  • By recapturing and reprocessing components from unused inventory bound for disposal, rather than manufacturing anew with virgin raw materials, Mowilex Recycled has a maximum 60% reduced carbon footprint compared to paint products of equal quality and formulation.
  • Aside from significantly reducing the amount of fresh water used in its production, Mowilex Recycled also saves energy and reduces potential waste.

The new Mowilex Recycled product line from PT Mowilex Indonesia (Mowilex) reduces water use, saves energy and cuts the carbon footprint of each 2.5-liter pail by up to 60 percent.

In reusing up to 40 percent of its premium paint per pail of Mowilex Recycled, the company is also reducing potential waste production without compromising its quality.

The process of making Mowilex Recycled begins with out-of-production colors of its premium paints as well as unused inventory that is aged, dried or in dented cans. Rather than disposing of these products, Mowilex evaluates and treats them for repurposing.

Out-of-specification (OOS) inventory is therefore reprocessed to create new paints under the Mowilex Recycled label, manufactured to the same high standards as other Mowilex paint products.

Ready-mixed Mowilex Recycled paints have low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and come in eight popular pastel colors with a luxurious matt finish. These durable interior paints are also formulated for exterior use in areas not exposed to direct sunlight.

Recycling paint lessens environmental impacts and benefits communities. It also reduces the need for new raw materials and requires less energy for extraction and manufacturing.

For example, by repurposing existing premium products, the company saves up to 8 percent clean water by volume for each gallon of Mowilex Recycled. Research shows that recycling 1 liter of paint saves an estimated 26 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy and prevents 14 kilograms of CO2 emissions. The overall carbon footprint of Mowilex Recycled is reduced by a maximum 60 percent compared to other paint products of equal quality and formulation.

By recapturing and reprocessing titanium dioxide and other components from unused inventory bound for waste disposal, Mowilex minimizes the energy-intensive extraction and manufacturing of virgin raw materials. Incorporating treated existing products into Mowilex Recycled also reduces the disposal of its unused premium paints.

As Mowilex eliminates potential waste with this production approach that focuses on material efficiency, it is contributing to the realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12. Goal 12 encourages sustainable consumption and production, and its targets include preventing or minimizing hazardous waste generation as part of a cleaner, integrated approach to overall production and reducing or eliminating the transboundary movement of hazardous waste.

"Mowilex Recycled offers an option for customers who prefer high-quality products with a reduced carbon footprint. By extensively treating and reprocessing our premium, out-of-specification inventory, we keep it from being disposed of as waste,” said Niko Safavi, CEO of Mowilex Indonesia.

“Mowilex Recycled meets the same high standards as all new Mowilex paints, and we estimate that each 2.5-liter pail lowers emissions by up to 60 percent compared to a 2.5-liter pail of new, nonrecycled paint," Safavi continued.

"Mowilex Recycled paints are also very attractively priced, so customers enjoy great value and premium quality while also lowering their environmental impact."

Mowilex Recycled is available to retail customers from online marketplaces, such as Shopee, and to property developers and contractors directly from Mowilex Indonesia.

Mowilex became Indonesia’s first CarbonNeutral® certified manufacturer in 2019, and recently earned its fifth consecutive CarbonNeutral® certification. The company offers a variety of products and runs a comprehensive range of environment, social and governance (ESG) programs as part of the Mowilex Sustainability Initiative.
