he Indonesian Government has approved the creation of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for health care in Sekupang and Nongsa, Batam, to be managed by the Mayapada Group, which owns Mayapada Healthcare (PT Sejahteraraya Anugrahjaya Tbk.). This decision was confirmed by Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto following the SEZ National Council Meeting on May 29, 2024.
Chairman and Group CEO of Mayapada Healthcare Jonathan Tahir expressed that this trust aligns with its commitment to international standard healthcare services. Following recent expansions, including the opening of the 6th Mayapada Hospital in Bandung and the groundbreaking of the 7th unit in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) in 2023, Mayapada Healthcare in collaboration with Apollo Hospitals India will now build an international standard hospital in the Batam Healthcare SEZ. The hospital will be named Mayapada Apollo Batam International Hospital. Jonathan Tahir emphasized that this initiative aims to cater to advanced health cases for Indonesians, reducing the need for treatment abroad and positioning Indonesia as a medical tourism destination. Mayapada Healthcare will also assist Mayapada Group in managing and transforming the operations of the RSBP Batam, a government hospital which is also located within the approved SEZ.
Foreign doctors and clinical staff will be allowed to practice in the SEZ, which will enable Indonesian specialists and nurses to work together with them to upskill and ensure knowledge transfer. Certain relaxations on imports of medicines and medical equipment will also help in reducing the overall cost of treatment, which is key to incentivizing Indonesians to seek treatment domestically.
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has often highlighted that around two million Indonesians seek medical treatment abroad annually, costing the country approximately Rp. 165 trillion (US$10.15 billion). Mayapada Healthcare’s hospital in the SEZ will help preserve valuable foreign exchange and in the future generate foreign exchange by providing high quality care to foreign patients and tourists at extremely competitive prices. Under the leadership of the President, the government passed a new healthcare bill in 2023 that has numerous provisions that will make sweeping changes to improve the quality of care in Indonesia.
Senior Vice President of Apollo Hospitals Group Dr. Harinder Singh Sidhu welcomed the approval of the health care SEZ, noting that Apollo Hospitals brings decades of medical expertise, particularly in complex procedures like organ transplants and cancer treatments. COO of Mayapada Healthcare Navin Sonthalia added that through the ongoing collaboration since 2023, Mayapada Healthcare has sent its medical staff for training and upskilling at various Apollo hospitals in India, especially for complex and/or innovative surgical procedures. This also ensures that Mayapada Healthcare’s professionals are equipped with the latest knowledge and techniques in various specialties.
IKN collaboration
Mayapada Healthcare marked a significant milestone in 2023 by breaking ground on their 7th hospital unit at the IKN. This project was inaugurated by President Jokowi
and demonstrates Mayapada Healthcare’s dedication to expanding health care access in Indonesia’s new capital city. The IKN hospital is scheduled to open in August this year for which Mayapada Healthcare also has a clinical collaboration with Apollo Hospitals India. This will further strengthen Mayapada Healthcare’s network, providing top-tier medical services and supporting the government's vision for the IKN's development.
