ndonesia affirmed its commitment to supporting WIPO's work programs and actively contributing to global intellectual property initiatives.
This was conveyed by the Indonesian Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna H. Laoly, during the opening of the 65th WIPO General Assembly session in Geneva on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.
"We hope future cooperation with WIPO will run smoothly, such as the establishment of the Indonesian Intellectual Property Academy and various ongoing projects related to the creative industry, trademarks, designs, and SMEs," he added.
Earlier, on July 8, 2024, Indonesia and WIPO signed the WIPO Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources, and Associated Traditional Knowledge (GRATK). This treaty aims to enhance the effectiveness, transparency, and quality of the patent system related to genetic resources and traditional knowledge. Additionally, it seeks to prevent patents from being erroneously granted for non-novel or non-innovative discoveries related to genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge.
Yasonna stated that Indonesia would expedite the treaty ratification process according to internal procedures. He hopes other countries will also ratify it soon to meet the minimum requirement of 15 ratifications for the treaty to enter into force.
"Indonesia is also in the process of registering the National Research and Innovation Agency, specifically the Indonesian Culture Collection (InaCC), as an International Depositary Authority (IDA) under the Budapest Treaty on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms for Patent Procedure purposes. This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to enhance Indonesia's role in the management and utilization of global genetic resources," Yasonna explained.
Specifically, Indonesia also emphasized the importance of succeeding in the Diplomatic Conference on the Design Law Treaty, to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in November this year. Contemporary issues such as digital technology and artificial intelligence will be discussed in the forum, given the crucial role of intellectual property in driving innovation in these fields.
"Therefore, Indonesia is ready to actively engage in shaping an international intellectual property framework that can bridge the digital divide and respond to technological advancements and societal needs," Yasonna said.
Moreover, as part of its ongoing commitment to leveraging intellectual property as a tool for economic advancement, Indonesia, together with ASEAN member states, is holding an exhibition of creative and innovative products from each country throughout the WIPO General Assembly. Additionally, a seminar on Collective Marks in Tourism and Creative Economy will be held on July 16, 2024.
"We are showcasing 135 Indonesian geographical indication products. This exhibition aims to promote and explore the potential of Indonesian products abroad," he concluded.
