ollowing an agreement between the government and the House of Representatives Legislation Body (Baleg), a draft bill (RUU) to amend Law No. 19/2006 on the Presidential Advisory Council (Wantimpres) has entered Level II discussions and decision-making prior to its passage into law.

Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (PAN-RB) Minister Abdullah Azwar Anas said that in principle, the government understood and fully supported RUU Wantimpres.

"The role of the Presidential Advisory Council is crucial as a source of independent and strategic perspectives and suggestions. Thus, this change is expected to strengthen the [council’s] position," Azwar Anas said, conveying the government's final opinion during the seventh DPR plenary session in the first session of the 2024-2025 House, held on Sept. 19 in the Nusantara II Building at the Senayan legislative complex in Jakarta.

The draft bill aims to optimize the function and strategic role of the Presidential Advisory Council as an institution providing feedback and suggestions to the President. The proposed amendment also includes increasing the council’s adaptability to new challenges facing the nation, especially in view of the increasing dynamics and complexities related to governance.

The council is expected to serve as the president’s key partner in providing recommendations that are constructive and relevant, and which cover various strategic dimensions, including the political, economic, social, legal and security aspects, to assist in the formulation of government policies. This is in alignment with the need for an institution that is capable of providing a multidimensional perspective on various national issues in advising the president.

The council is also expected to develop its recommendations by undertaking an in-depth research and quality analysis in advising the president in making strategic decisions.

"Wantimpres is an institution that is able to provide strategic recommendations," said the bureaucratic reform minister.

Continuing, Azwar Anas said the government saw it was important to strengthen cross-sector coordination through the Presidential Advisory Council, which could provide perspectives to strengthen strategic coordination between the economic, social and political sectors to produce policies that were relevant, integrative and sustainable for each sector.

"We believe that in passing this bill, we have taken a step forward in strengthening the [council] to be more responsive and relevant in facing various challenges, now and in the future," he said.
