he Malu Dong Community, in collaboration with the Sampoerna Retail Community (SRC) under the "Sampoerna for Indonesia" sustainability program and other organizations, held a beach cleanup event in Muntig Siokan, Sanur, Denpasar on Sept. 22, 2024. This event was part of the "Love the Earth: Manage Waste to Reduce Environmental Footprint" program, and was themed "Cleanup and Waste Management for a More Comfortable Denpasar."
In addition to the cleanup, the Malu Dong Community and its partners provided 50 modern teba (traditional Balinese waste disposal systems) to the local community and installed banners promoting "Wise Waste Sorting" at 496 locations throughout Denpasar. They also hosted a waste sorting and management workshop attended by about 50 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Denpasar Mayor I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara, who joined the beach cleanup, expressed his appreciation to the Malu Dong Community and SRC for addressing the waste issue through the #SayaAjaBisa movement.
Launched in 2018, the #SayaAjaBisa movement aims to raise environmental awareness among the public, including educating people about proper waste disposal habits. To date, around 5,000 people, including volunteers, have participated in the initiative.
"We are truly grateful for this support. Hopefully, the activities through #SayaAjaBisa will inspire the community to take care of the environment," said Jaya Negara.
Dewa Agung Wahyu, a representative of the Malu Dong Community, expressed hope that the event would benefit the local community and environment.
"This initiative is part of our collective effort to manage the waste we produce. Our hope is that the spirit to make Denpasar more comfortable will continue beyond today and carry on in the days to come," Wahyu added.
Meanwhile, Arief Triastika, representing Sampoerna for Indonesia, highlighted that this initiative is the result of a collaboration between the Malu Dong Community and SRC.
"This event emphasizes collective efforts to raise awareness of environmental sustainability and strengthen the involvement of government, communities and organizations in preserving the environment," Arief explained.
Arief further noted that SRC actively supports and organizes various activities, including educating the public on proper waste disposal habits.
"As part of today’s cleanup event, we are also continuing our support for the installation of 50 modern teba, a hallmark of household waste management systems in Bali, which will be distributed to Sanur Kauh Village and Sanur Kaja Village," Arief concluded.
