PNM empowers customers in Wukirsari, UN Best Tourism Village 2024

W

ukirsari, a village located in Imogiri subdistrict of Bantul regency, Yogyakarta, has brought pride to Indonesia on the international stage for its recognition as a Best Tourism Village 2024 by United Nations Tourism, formerly the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). UN Tourism announced last year’s recipients on Nov. 14, 2024, in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, with the full list of 55 Best Tourism Villages also broadcast on the organization’s YouTube channel.

The recognition of Wukirsari as a Best Tourism Village was based on an assessment of its natural and cultural resources, as well as innovative and transformative actions and commitments toward tourism development in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The village is also home to clients of state-owned ultra-microfinancing firm PT Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM) through the PNM Mekaar program, which provides support that aims to empower communities and boost the local economy.

One such client is Ibu (Mrs.) Annis, who shared her experience managing a business that produces wayang kulit, traditional wayang puppets made of leather, which has become a highlight of cultural tourism in Wukirsari.

"In this business, consistency and the courage to try new things are key. I also encouraged women in my neighborhood to learn how to make this handicraft. Currently, I have around 10-15 women that help make wayang kulit, which has also increased their income," Annis said.

The support PNM provides is not limited to financing, and also includes mentoring and empowerment programs that foster innovation and collaboration among villagers. PNM Mekaar encourages clients, especially women entrepreneurs, to become drivers of economic growth for their families and communities.

PNM President Director Arief Mulyadi lauded the achievements of Wukirsari village.

"We are proud to see how the PNM Mekaar program has positively impacted the village community, particularly in empowering women as the driving force of the local economy. Wukirsari's success as a [UN Tourism] Best Tourism Village is tangible proof that collaboration between communities, government and the private sector can drive sustainable development," said Arief.

With continued support from PNM, it is hoped that Wukirsari can keep progressing and serve as an inspiration for other villages in Indonesia to realize their full potential in sustainable tourism development.
