Protes pecah saat DPR loloskan RUU TNI

Anggota DPR dan pejabat pemerintah bersikeras bahwa revisi UU TNI didasarkan pada "prinsip-prinsip demokrasi, supremasi sipil, dan hak asasi manusia". Mereka bersikeras bahwa  diperlukan revisi karena situasi geopolitik saat ini.

DPR meloloskan revisi UU TNI yang kontroversial pada Kamis 20 Maret. Langkah itu memicu protes besar di beberapa kota. Protes didasarkan pada kekhawatiran para kritikus bahwa undang-undang baru tersebut akan merusak demokrasi dan membuka pintu kebangkitan peran angkatan bersenjata dalam urusan sipil.

Dalam sebulan terakhir, para kritikus mengecam rencana untuk merevisi undang-undang tersebut. Mereka memperingatkan bahwa langkah tersebut berisiko membawa negara kembali ke aturan rezim Orde Baru yang otoriter, seperti saat negara dipimpin oleh mantan presiden Soeharto. Di masa itu, perwira militer yang masih aktif bertugas dapat menjabat di posisi yang biasanya untuk warga sipil, tanpa harus mengundurkan diri dari militer.

Meskipun ada penentangan publik yang meluas, DPR, yang didominasi oleh partai-partai politik yang mendukung Presiden Prabowo Subianto, dengan suara bulat menyetujui revisi undang-undang tersebut. SIdang pleno dilaksanakan pada Kamis pagi.

Ketua DPR Puan Maharani dari Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (PDI-P), satu-satunya partai oposisi de facto, mengetuk palu dua kali di rapat pleno, setelah meminta persetujuan anggota parlemen untuk meloloskan RUU tersebut.
