he Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) last Wednesday declared its support for President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo’s third term, marking a turnaround for the emerging party once touted to bring the political representation of Indonesian youths.

Political uncertainty continued to hover after three leaders of a coalition of pro-government parties recently floated the suggestion the 2024 general elections be postponed, reviving the speculation that Jokowi is seeking a third term.

The PSI, an emerging party that failed to pass the electoral threshold necessary to obtain seats at the House of Representatives but remained Jokowi’s prominent supporter, meanwhile, declared on Wednesday its support for Jokowi’s third term in office.

PSI secretary-general Dea Tunggaesti said her party opposed proposals to delay the 2024 elections, but supported the reelection of Jokowi.

“We, as lovers and admirers of Jokowi, will of course always continue supporting Jokowi to lead Indonesia again. But of course, this must be based on a constitutional amendment that allows Jokowi to compete again in 2024,” Dea said on Wednesday in a statement.

“If the parties at the House see that there are strong aspirations from the public for Jokowi to continue his leadership for a third term, then the only way is through the process of amending the 1945 Constitution so that the maximum number of presidential terms is increased to three,” Dea said.
