Family to send Portuguese climber's remains home to Israel
The body of Boaz Bar Anan, a 37-year-old Portuguese national who died from a fall on the Mount Rinjani in Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), is scheduled to be returned on Friday to his country of origin, Israel, for burial.

he body of Boaz Bar Anan, a 37-year-old Portuguese national who died in a fall on Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), is scheduled to be returned on Friday to his country of origin, Israel, for burial.
Mount Rinjani National Park Agency head Dedy Asriady said that following search and rescue operations to retrieve the remains, an autopsy had been conducted before the Portuguese-Israeli's body was sent to Tel Aviv from Bali.
Dedy said that an Indonesian national entrusted by Anan’s family would help with the body’s shipment and other administrative matters.
Separately, head of Mataram Immigration Office Onward Victor Manahan Lumban Toruan said that his office had notified the Portuguese Embassy in Jakarta regarding the incident.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah said that the ministry would also notify the Portuguese Embassy.
Faizasyah however did not elaborate when asked whether there were any specific procedures for the return of Anan’s body headed for Israel, with which Indonesia has no diplomatic relationship.
“For humanitarian matters there are usually options that can be done,” he said.
On Aug. 19, the Mount Rinjani National Park Agency was notified by trekking organizer Rudy Trekker that Anan fell from the peak of Rinjani and presumably died at around 5:30 a.m. local time.
Anan was reported to have fallen from the northwest part of the mountain peak toward the slopes heading to Segara Anak Lake, which is on top of Mt. Rinjani, which stands 3,726 meters above sea level.
According to the trekking organizer, Anan was taking a selfie a moment before the incident.
The following afternoon, a search and rescue team composed of personnel from the park agency, Mataram Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and other agencies was assembled.
The team arrived at the Plawangan Sembalun emergency shelter in the evening before starting the search around the peak of Rinjani early on Aug. 20.
The trekking route toward Mt. Rinjani peak was closed during the search and rescue mission.
The search continued throughout Sunday but was hindered by strong winds and the rocky condition of the mountain slopes before the body was found on Monday afternoon.
The body was then brought to the Bhayangkara police hospital in the NTB provincial capital of Mataram for autopsy on Monday evening.
Dedy said that the search and rescue effort for Anan was one of the highest rescue missions conducted in Indonesia. (dre)
